Here’s the thing with collecting top prospects: the value of their rookie/prospect autograph cards are usually the highest before they even play a Major League game.
That’s because the hype builds as top prospects dominate (as they should) in the minors and prospectors salivate at the young player’s potential.
Inevitably, when they do get called up, it’s rare young players adjust immediately to Major League pitching, and as a result, they struggle.
But top prospects are better than so many other Minor Leaguers for a reason. They usually have high baseball IQ and can adapt faster than others. If you believe the talent, the results should come sooner or later.
Kyle Tucker, a top prospect for the Houston Astros, falls into this category. Keith Law of ESPN tweets a good reminder to us all.
From a collecting standpoint, any drop in value could present a great buy low opportunity. And there happens to be several Tucker autograph prospect cards on eBay auction, which all end today.
Of course, there are top prospects that become busts (ie. Todd Van Poppel). But then there are others who started off slow in their first call up to The Show, but then performed admirably after the adjustment period – just like some player named Mike Trout.
