Why aren’t gold refractor sports cards more limited?

Gold has always been synonymous with “the best,” right? For example, the “gold standard” is what people strive to go after.

So why then in the world of sports card collecting does a gold refractor have less value than an orange or red refractor?

Typically gold refractors are numbered to 50 (and that’s not even exclusive to gold as other refractors like the “black wave” is also numbered to 50), while the orange and red are numbered to 25 and 5, respectively?

Maybe there’s a logical answer to this baffling question. If you have one, please let us know!

In the meantime, there’s this amazing Kris Bryant 2013 Bowman Chrome autograph rookie gold refractor (BGS 9.5/10) up for eBay auction, which ends tonight (click link to see posting).
